I watched Jesus Camp a few months back. One of the kids in the film was reading a Jack Chick comic, so I felt I'd share another of his comics. I've also been thinking of Frank Miller's Sin City lately. Lo and behold, Jack Chick wrote a strip titled Sin City. But that's about the only element the two have in common.

Jack Chick's Sin City is about a pastor who is protesting homosexuality. Due to his "radical stance", he is nearly beaten to death. While recuperating, he meets a gay priest who harbors a demon, which of course clouds his judgment. After some choice words of wisdom involving Sodom and Gomorrah by the pastor, the demon is excised, and the priest repents his sins. The End.

Not a very uplifting tale, and a bit one sided,...man I don't have the energy to even go into this one. Check the link to read the actual comic...OR... check this link for some tight pants sinning.

American Splendor Presents: Bob & Harv's Comics

Harvey Pekar has passed away. He will be missed.

Bob and Harv's comics are a collection of strips written by the one and only Harvey Pekar and illustrated by the one and only Robert Crumb. The art is composed of Crumb's scratchy cross hatching, set to everyday occurrences in Pekar's life. Pekar has a unique voice in the world of comics. It's hard to describe Pekar's stories. You'll just have to give 'em a read.

Here is a couple favorites of mine, titled Hospital Fun. As well, I've posted an edit I made in tribute of Harvey's most famous strip.

This was the comic that I found for $0.25 that had the long sought after 3D glasses. I just got to reading it. The story is decent. The X-Men and the Wildcats folk infiltrate a rogue Hellfire sect. The leader of the Hellfire sect is trying to summon the power of a demon to work for him. However, the X-Men and Wildcats put a quick stop to that. Not more complicated than that.

The 3D effects are good too. The issue is devised by adding a red and blue tint, which allows the reader (with the help of the glasses) to see a three dimensional image. Monsters vs. Aliens in 3D does this same thing, but instead of using the red and blue channels, they use twin projectors which create the same effect. It's pretty frickin' cool! This leads to a crystal clear image with eye poppin' visuals! Go see it!!!

Spider-Man the Manga # 3

The manga version of Spider-Man is pretty cool. It sticks fairly close to the Spider-man ethos. Peter Parker is Yu Komari. In issue # 3 Komari is lamenting his latest defeat at the electric hands of Electro. Meanwhile, Electro is realizing that his lust for money carries a larger price tag then he could ever imagine.

At my old job I met a customer named Peter Parker. When I asked his name he said his first name no problem, but then slightly mumbled his last name. I never said a word. After we were done talking, I kinda felt bad for the guy. He has to live with the name of one of the most famous fictional characters in comic history. However, unlike his comic alter ego, this guy doesn't get to be Spider-Man on the side, swinging from building to building, saving lives, and bringing joy to people. Oh well, I'm sure at the end of the day he'll be alright. Hell, maybe his nickname is Spidey. I can see this guy being good on the bb court. He'd be blasting through defenses, rebounding like a mad nun, and scoring 3 pointers left right and center, all the while, the crowd is shouting: "Go Spidey! Go Spidey!" Yeah, this Peter Parker will be alright.

If you're a someone, than you know or gots Batman Black & White. This is a Batman series that is exactly what it is called: Batman in black and white. Creators were given the chance to write/draw a 8 page self-contained story of the Dark Knight. Issue # 4 has got the infamous "An Innocent Guy" by Brian Bolland, which alone, makes this issue a hot number. What makes my particular copy extra special is that this is only 1 of only a 1000 issues printed that were in eye popping 3D!

Archie: The "Masked Marvel"

I normally wouldn't post 2 Archie comics in one week, but after reading this one I had to get it out to the fans!

Archie is wearing a monster mask to school, and is insulted that people recognize him right away.

Betty remarks that the guys are doing this to boost their attractiveness, by taking of the mask and in comparison, they look much better. Veronica thinks the girls are too smart for this gimmick...but maybe she's mistaken:


Proving Veronica wrong, Archie corners a young damsel, and scares her into a date for Saturday night.


Betty and veronica assure the young lady that no date made under threat is legitimate, but the girl insists she must go. Veronica then asks why she was so scared when it was obviously Archie under the mask.


The young lady responds by removing her face and revealing a BIG GIANT EYE!



Oh, it's just Eyeda! Yuk yuk yuk...!! Too bad for Archie!
And the moral of the story is: don't scare women into having dates with you. You just may date a girl with a GIANT MONSTER EYE FOR A FACE! At least dinner will be cheap!

Lady Death # 4

90 seconds starting....NOW!

Lady death is fighting Lucifer to regain her true self. She beats him up and kicks him in the nuts. Ouch. The artwork is pretty chaotic, with no defined panels, which makes for a cool and crazy read. So really there isn't too much beyond that. Lady Death kicking ass in a black bikini, and in this issue you are greeted with two tones of her: red or white. The devil is all red and bad. Did I mention he gets kneed in the nuts? TIME!




SHAZAM!

New Love # 1

I'm new to the world of Love and Rockets, but from what I have read, it's pretty cool. The artwork looks great, and stories are interesting and 'life filled.' New Love has 2 stories and a couple strips attached.

The first tale has Venus getting in trouble for reading a porn comic. The second tale has this weird creepy guy trying to help his 'love.' His love happens to be a mob mistress, and to help her he has to stare into the depths of death (as far as I can figure). Each time he looks he has to stare longer and longer to get help from death. This subsequently causes him great harm. The story ends with his mother dead, and his love willing to follow him. To where, no idea: she just says she's going with him.

So, sticking to my love analogies, sometimes love means staring into the depths of death, and not knowing what the hell is going on. That and porn comics are not for minors.

Just over a week away from V-Day!

In my quest to find lovey dovey comics I've hit bit of a wall, ie. I didn't want to try today...because I'm feeling a bit shitty. However that being said, just like some days are shitty, so can love be shitty. So for today's romance comic review, here's one just on poo.

Captain Dingleberry is a superhero who can summon The Fecal Four from his butt. They are lumps of crap: Super Turd, Boil, Crazy Eight, and Runny. In this issue he is battling a bitter art nerd, who he ends up sending to Assville which is a universe that is entered via his poop shoot. In Assville, the villain heads to Yeast of Eden which is a Salon and Bakery, and it is here that he meets Sir Richard. Meanwhile, Cpt. Dingleberry and his Fecal Four are going to reign in Curly The Fallen Dingleberry.

No, I did not just make that up...this is one of those comics that ol' Voltaire has a saying for: "I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."
